The aims of the module are:-
To introduce students to the cost and management accounting environment within business organisations and the need for, and uses of, management and cost accounting
To develop in the student an understanding of basic costing concepts and techniques.
To create an awareness of the need for accurate product and service costs within an organisation.
To develop in the student an ability to accumulate and classify costing data.
To develop in the students an ability to interpret cost reports and their limitations.
To develop students learning to learn skills in the use of information technology.
Financial management accounting , planning and control.
Nature of costs - accumulation and classification.
Absorption and marginal costing
Overhead allocation and apportionment
Job and process costing
Standard costing and variance analysis
Cost, volume and profit relationships
Relevant costs for decision making
Formal Lectures will introduce students to each topic which will be supported by students undertaking directed reading. Tutorials will follow the formal lectures, at which the students will be asked to apply the knowledge and understanding into a range of case studies.
