This module is designed to create a critical understanding of the principals of textile science and technology so as to provide solutions to technological problems in general and selected fields. It is also intended to develop participants' knowledge and skills of the application areas in which a technical textile may be utilised.
The module will allow the students to acquire a critical understanding of the methods by which the properties of a technical textile may be characterised and measured.
Applying the understanding and knowledge developed into the identification and characterisation of a problem and the successful specification of a textile product which may be used to solve the problem.
Overview of technical textiles market.
Raw materials within technical textile (fibres/yarns).
Fabric Structures for technical end-uses.
Textile finishing for increased performance.
Application areas and case studies
• Performance clothing (water repellency / breathability / survival)
Material durability and performance
Disposal and Environmental Impact
An intensive course of lectures and workshops over 5 –10 days will be used to introduce the participants to the subject matter. Each participant will be provided with a structured learning package in order to develop their knowledge, comprehension and application of the material presented.
The module will be delivered by a combination of technical presentation and discussion of case studies in which the technical content of the module may be applied to allow the participant to arrive at feasible solutions to the problem presented in the case study.
This module will be assessed by completion of all the assignments. This must be submitted in three parts, a, b and c of increasing depth and application at monthly intervals form the end of the short course. This will allow formal feedback during the remote phase of the module.

|1.||Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of the main issues involved and principles and techniques used in the manufacture and use of technical textiles.||Differentiate between a range of technical fabric products, and through analysis discuss the method of manufacture.|
|2.||Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the properties, performance standards and applications of a limited number of new and technical products.||Discuss the role and critical importance of materials performance for a technical textile and how this performance may be achieved through the manufacturing methods utilised.|
|3.||Relate technical textiles to other technologies.||Explain the selection and processing of raw material for the technical textile and the relationship between the selection of the raw material and requirements of the end use.|
|4.||Undertake research into the area of technical textiles, concentrating on an application area of individual choice.||Identify and retrieve relevant information from various sources with minimal assistance.|
|5.||Generate ideas through a critical analysis of technical textile concepts and formulate responses to well defined scenarios.||Identify and assess the technical textile concepts and approaches and critically evaluate proposals and justify recommendations based on concrete evidence.|
