The abilities to accurately measure and quantify resources, describe construction works, understand the relationship between measurement rules and cost and interpret contract documents are basic skills for students of construction related courses. This module introduces students to the skills and techniques required to enable them to accurately measure and describe construction works in accordance with the relevant standard method of measurement and prepare Bills of Quantities and specifications.
1 to establish and develop the skills and techniques of measurement;
2 to develop a methodical approach to the measurement and description of construction works;
3 to understand the relationship between measurement rules and cost;
4 to provide an introduction to the preparation and use of bills of quantities and specifications;
Bill production and tender estimating (15%)
Interpreting the requirements of the SMM: How consistency is achieved for the purpose of accurate pricing, direct and indirect provisional sums
Measurement and description of traditionally constructed low-rise domestic, commercial and industrial buildings on level sites.
Bill Production (25%)
Processing quantities and producing bills of quantities and specifications using a range of manual techniques and formats.
Assessed by assignment work (exercises on various building elements), to determine the content of individual student knowledge / application.
Teaching and learning will be largely done by a series of lectures, workshop and class exercises

||Calculate quantities accurately, employing neat and methodical setting-out of quantities, waste calculations, bills of quantities and specifications|
