40 credits at level HE5
This module is designed to provide the student with a vehicle to develop their prior and concurrent learning into practical work related skills. It is further designed to help them develop their own personal management skills in terms of time and working with others towards a final pre-set goal. The module will utilise the learning in the year 1 modules along with the modules that are being concurrently studied and place the learning into a realistic work based project. The students will be given a set of specifications and/or outline drawings for a real project and they will be tasked to produce for example: working drawings; realistic programmes; envronmentally sustainable construction proposals; health & safety plans; health & safety files; operational management plans and costings of various elements of the project.
The module will introduce the students to discipline related issues, each discipline will have some dedicated sessions that will cover discipline related issues as well as integrating learning in the second year modules of CAD; Building and Sustainable Technology and Project Management. The type of discipline realated issues encountered will include Architectural Design Theory; Property Appraisal and Management and the role of the Quanitity Surveyor. It will also offer the opportuniity for students who cannot undertake a workplacement to take on a specific role within the project and use this simulated work experience to meet the learning outcomes of the Work Experience module BLT2753
The module will be delivered by a mixture of seminars, tutorials and self directed study. This module runs for a complete academic year, with most of the directed input being at the early part of the module; however tutorial meetings will be scheduled for the whole year. Students will make individual presentations based on their input to the group project aspect of the module.; the main element of the assessment is the portfolio of work presented at the end of the module.
