The module will focus on advanced concepts and skills required for creative 3D modelling and digital sculpting, which is the foundation of the computer generated imagery (CGI) industry, including games, series animations, and feature films.
You will learn how to use and enhance your skills in 3D modelling using numerous advanced modelling techniques and theory. You will then explore the world of 3D digital sculpting to add a professional amount of detail to your 3D work to reflect the standard of work that is expected in today’s game and movie industry.
Advanced Modelling: principles of advanced modelling, spline manipulation, Quad & Tri theory and its importance, Edge flow techniques. Low polygon modelling & preparation for a sculpting package
Digital sculpting: Introduction to sculpting package, its user interface and tools (brushes, masks, layers, render options, object tools, shortcuts)
Sub-division levels and sculpting: Render final sculpt out to various detailed maps (normal maps, displace maps, specular maps, occlusion maps, dust maps)
Importing back into a 3D package and applying detail maps
Theory on the importance of digital sculpting and mapping in all CGI industries including games design
You will have lectures and practical sessions which will involve group work and group discussions as well as individual work. A blended learning approach will be adopted.
There are two items of assessment which will be used to determine your grade for the module. Firstly, you will demonstrate the implementation of polygon modelling, sculpting and 3D mapping techniques as specified in the assignment. For the second assessment item you will provide (i) a digital diary (approximately 700 words) documenting the process and procedures used in your modelling, sculpting and 3D mapping, and explaining how you have incorporated principles of advanced modelling and sculpting techniques in your work, and (ii) a written evaluation (approximately 500 words).
You will be provided with formative feedback of your assessment work in progress.

1.1 Produce a workable low polygon 3D model using advanced modelling and sculpting techniques, based on your original sketches.
1.2 Apply appropriate details correctly to your model using a sculpting package.
1.3 Reimport your model and apply maps created with your sculpting work.

Your achievement of the learning outcomes for this module will be tested as follows:
