In this module you will be introduced to study skills and learn how to use technology to enhance communication and organisation of collaborative work. Study skills and using technology are vital for your success on the Foundation Degree programme because you will need to work collaboratively with peers and tutors, participate in online discussions, undertake online learning activities, present your assessments in an online portfolio, and meet appropriate academic standards.
The module has three key elements. The first element is learning about how people interact to support each other’s learning, appropriate etiquette, ethical considerations, and trust when working collaboratively online. This will give you an understanding of some of the theoretical issues surrounding learning collaboratively online. The second element is developing the technical ICT knowledge and skills that will enable you to confidently participate in online activities and create and publish material using available and emerging tools so you can present and submit work for assessment in the required format of an online portfolio. This aspect of the module will help you to develop the ICT capability that can enhance your lifelong learning and transferable employment skills, and your capacity to contribute to practitioner knowledge and understanding through participation in an online learning community of practice and undertaking online learning activities. The third element is an introduction to study skills and to reflective practice and in this element you will learn about the general academic requirements of coursework at HE level 4, which is the academic level you need to achieve in your assessed work in respect of half of the programme. You will also learn how to use an online-based learning journal and how to reflect on your experiences in a way that promotes learning.
Indicative Syllabus Content
1. Theoretical aspects about learning collaboratively online
Advantages and challenges of learning collaboratively online; how to develop and support professional learning online; communities of practice.
2. People skills
How people interact to support each other’s learning; appropriate etiquette; how to give feedback to peers; receiving feedback from others; ethical and professional considerations; trust when working collaboratively online; diversity and inclusiveness when working with others on the programme.
3. Technical ICT knowledge and skills
Auditing your ICT knowledge and skills; active participation in discussions in online learning communities; creating and publishing material using available and emerging tools; devising and submitting an online portfolio; multimedia applications; utilising an inclusive approach when working with others on the programme.
4. Study / academic skills and reflective practice
Approach to assessment used on the Foundation Degree programme (e.g., inquiry based, negotiated assessments, online portfolio); assessment requirements of the module; agreeing a learning and assessment plan; appropriate structure and presentation of work for assessment in an online portfolio; correct use of English (e.g., grammar, punctuation, spelling, style); online searches including literature searches; Harvard referencing; plagiarism and how to avoid it; bibliography in Harvard format; incorporating theoretical knowledge appropriate to level HE4 into your work; reflective practice; learning journals; reflective accounts; learning from experience and reflection.
5. Transferable skills
Planning (e.g., planning an inquiry with appropriate learning activities); time management; communication; working with others; technical ICT knowledge and skills (as listed above).
6. Student-determined content
Some of the content will be determined by you when preparing for, and undertaking, your assessed work for the module.
Learning will be supported through an online community of inquiry where you, peer students, tutors and invited contributors will engage in discussions, interactive debates, and online activities to explore and share key concepts, ideas, relevant topics and offer encouragement and support. Your participation in the online community each week is compulsory. The module will be delivered mostly online with opportunities for face-to-face sessions. Although key resources required for the delivery of the module will be available online, you are also expected to identify suitable resources in your workplace, libraries, and online, that are relevant to your assessed work.
For your assessment, you will develop an online portfolio of work. The portfolio evidence must meet the learning outcomes for the module. You will agree how you will meet the learning outcomes with your tutor, the evidence you will present for assessment, and how you will present the portfolio evidence.

|1.||Understand the potential advantages and problems of working collaboratively online and learn from your experiences of doing so.||
1.1 Research and discuss at least three potential advantages and three potential challenges of learning collaboratively online and ways to minimise the problems.
1.2 In relation to 1.1 above, evaluate your experiences of learning collaboratively online and suggest at least two strategies to help you improve your experiences of online learning.
|2.||Have used internet technologies to support your own and fellow students’ learning and development, evaluated how well you gave support and suggested strategies to improve how you give support.||
2.1 Provide at least three different examples of instances where you have supported your fellow students’ learning and development in the online learning community for the Foundation Degree programme, and at least three examples of how they have supported yours.
2.2 Evaluate how well you gave support to your fellow peers and suggest strategies to improve how you give support.
|3.||Be able to publish material online.||3.1 Create and upload media to the internet and justify your choice of method and destination. The media should include a word processed document and a picture.|
|4.||Have conducted an online literature search and selected appropriate relevant material.||
4.1 Conduct an online literature search of appropriate journals and books (including e-books) to obtain relevant and quality academic literature to support work undertaken in this module.
4.2 Explain how you have assured yourself that material is of good academic quality.
4.3 Prepare a bibliography in Harvard format listing the sources you have referred to in your assessed work for this module (there should be a minimum of five sources listed).

5.1 Justify the need to use appropriate study and academic skills.
5.2 Demonstrate the following in your assessed work:
(i) appropriate structure and good presentation;
(ii) correct use of English (e.g., grammar, punctuation, spelling, style);
(iii) correct use of Harvard referencing;
(iv) theoretical knowledge appropriate to level HE4.
Your achievement of the learning outcomes for this module will be tested as follows:
