The module offers the students the opportunity to :
-contextualise their studio practice and enable them to understand their own work in relation to Twentieth century developments in the fine arts.
-address the major developments in Fine arts practice in the Twentieth century.
-engage in a discussion of the material, technological, social and economic considerations that have come to bear on Fine arts during the Twentieth century
A themed programme of lectures and seminars - Indicative syllabus:
-Creation of the Avant Garde
-Relationship between science and fine art
-Revolution and Internationalism in the fine arts
-Art and Conflict
-Consumer culture and and art object
-Minimalism and Scale
The module will be delivered through a structured series of lectures, seminars and study visits.

10 x seminar group sessions
2 study visits
Tutorials and PDP
Assessment will be one written essay of 2500 words in length and one practical/ studio based assessment relevant to the students subjects specialism.

|1.||Be able to evaluate the main issues that have informed Twentieth century fine art practice and discuss their relevance to your own work||Have completed an essay that evaluates an aspect of Twentieth century art practice that coresponds to your own studio practice|
|2.||Be able to critically analyse major criitical theories that inform C20th practice.||Have presented a seminar paper that addresses a C20th critical perspective and explain your understanding of the work verbally and in writing.|
|3.||Be able to research effectively and communicate your views and opinions through a focused, well constructed argument||Present a researched critical response to the essay question that demonstrates your understanding and analysis of the issues raised.|
Your achievement of the learning outcomes for this module will be tested as follows:
