• Aims to examine art that is made to be placed in an urban setting, exploring the needs and expectations associated with artworks in an urban setting.
• Will also explore the growing phenomena of urban re-generation and its impact upon the urban landscape.
• Aims to encourage the development of at least one project that could be placed in an urban setting.
• Will allow the student to develop a project set-up in collaboration with an outside agency, or as a plan for a specific site, as part of a negotiated project.
Students will be introduced to the growth of urban environmental art, and its impact upon our urban landscapes. What are the considerations and restrictions that need to be made in the development of urban and environmental art? Who are the commissioners of urban and environmental art? What is the purpose, and how is it different to working on individual art projects? Students will create a proposal for a site specific artwork that could be part of an actual commission, or as an idea for a commission. A journal will be compiled throughout the module, with research linked to the theoretical study of Art and the Urban Environment. A sketch book will also be used that illustrates the students development and thinking in the setting up of a specific project. Group discussions will take place throughout the module, together with regular critiques and lectures.
There will be 13 five hour sessions involving lectures, group discussion, studio work and
individual tutorials (65 hours). Independent Field trips will take place to study examples of urban based art work. Study time will be equivalent to 135 hours. You will present a portfolio of practical work that includes a proposal outline, macquettes, and relevant research into the proposed site. You will also submit a research journal that explores the theoretical background to the subject, including specific research into at least one main example. A sketch book that illustrates the development of a proposal for a site specific project, with relevant background research to the site and reasons behind the decisions taken, will form part of the sketch book material. The module will be marked as a summative assessment at the end of the semester. There will be at least two members of staff who will carry out the assessment. The main weighting of assessment will come from the practical outcomes, with the journal and sketchbooks providing supportive material to the practical presentation.

|3.||Be able to create a proposal for an art work, pertinent to a specific site, identified for its potential for benefiting an art work.||Have produced a body of practical work as part of a proposal for a specific site, with a justification for that particular proposal outlined in a supportive material.|
Your achievement of the learning outcomes for this module will be tested as follows:
