This module introduces students to the diverse and dynamic nature of the Events Industry and examines the role of event management within the service sector. The module will provide a practical framework in which a special event project is planned, organised and controlled, ensuring a successful real (or simulated) project. It sets out to develop the team-working, decision-making, negotiation and communication, skills needed to effectively manage, within the Events sector.
• The nature of the event industry – Diversity of the sector; range of venues; types of events; the size and worth of the industry; the macro and micro environments; the development of the industry; the impact of events.
• Roles and functions of events – corporate hospitality; trade fairs and exhibitions; product extensions and launches; global issues.
• Strategic planning of an event – aim and objectives setting; planning; organisation and budgeting; provision of food, beverage and support services; ergonomic considerations; administrative procedures; type and level of service; health, safety and hygiene; client and contractor relationships; evaluation.
• Marketing, financial and legal considerations – the component elements of the contract; budget setting and targets; evaluation and review techniques.
• Management skills – Team-building; Decision-making; negotiation; communication; delegation; leadership.
This module is mostly practical, with underpinning theory being delivered in the first 3 weeks of the module. Learners will then prepare for their event projects in individual groups, through case study and workshop practical sessions, preparing a Business Plan initially for the event project, orchestrating a special event and finally evaluating the overall event project.

|1.||Be able to develop an effective plan, as part of a team, for an identified event.||Create and present a Business Plan as a team, (written individual BP) for an event which outlines the strategic main considerations, when planning to stage a successful event.|
|2.||Be able to organise and participate in the staging of an event.||Be able to critically appraise, in the form of a reflective diary, your own contribution and performance, and that of the team, when staging an event.|
|3.||Be able to evaluate the success of an event and make suggestions for improvement.||Be able to produce a management report that demonstrates the correct use of English and the ability to reference sources and produce a references list in an acceptable format.|
|4.||Be able to critically appraise your own performance and that of the team, in planning, staging and evaluating the success of the event.||Be able to produce a management report that demonstrates the correct use of English and the ability to reference sources and produce a references list in an acceptable format.|
Your achievement of the learning outcomes for this module will be tested as follows:
