Description and Purpose of Module

To build on the topics and skills introduced in Engineering Science . To improve ability in applying knowledge and analytical processes, through solving engineering problems. The module utilises appropriate computer aided software to expand understanding of all the key areas to provide a tool kit to accelerate application.

Indicative Syllabus Content

1) Deflection

* Moment-Curvature equation
* Macaulay's Method for simply supported and cantilever beams
* Effects of Couples
* Maximum Deflection

2) Energy Methods

* Strain Energy methods
* Analysis of deflection of frameworks using virtual displacements
* Castigaliano's Theorem of Deflection

3) Complex Stress

* Two dimensional complex stress analysis
* Mohr's circle of stress
* Principal stresses

4) Complex Strain

* Two dimensional complex strain analysis
* Strain measurement using rosettes
* Circle of Strain (McClintock method)
* Principal strains

5) Struts

* Analysis of vartious support type struts using Euler and Rankine-Gordon methods

6) Thick Cylinders

* Analysis of stress in thick walled cylinders
* Lame equations
* Compound Cylinders

7) Turning Moment Diagrams

* Analysis of engine cycles and power presses
* Coefficient of Speed
* Coefficient of Fluctuation
* Choice of Flywheel size

8) Vibrations

* Analysis of Damped Vibration Systems
* Analysis of Forced Vibration systems
* Tranmissibility

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Delivery of this module will concentrate on promoting problem solving skills using known and accepted mathematical techniques, scientific principles and utilisation of appropriate sotware for each of the topic areas.
The delivery will be structured as follows:
Formal lectures contribute to the delivery of the specified curriculum: 2hrs/wk for 30 wks = 60hrs
Laboratory sessions used to determine the limitations of scientific principles of the syllabus 4 x 2hrs = 8hrs
Tutorial sessions : 1 hr/wk x 30 wks = 30 hrs
Directed and Self Learning = 102 hrs
