Critically consider the theories, models and associated research connected with the psychology of strength and conditioning
Provide an awareness and understanding of the role of psychology in a modern strength and conditioning context
Critically evaluate contemporary literature regarding the application of psychological theory to strength and conditioning
Psychological Skills Training. Relaxation skills, goal setting, imagery, self talk, applications in the context of strength an dconditioning
Abnormal psychology. The identification, nature and treatment of drug abuse, compulsive exercising, eating disorders, overtarining and burnout in the context of stength and conditioning
Counselling skills. Theories and practice of counselling in the context of strength and conditioning
Motivation. Definitions, theroires and models of motivation, exercise adherence and drop-out in teh context of sport, developing athletes and strength and conditioning
Stress and anxiety in strength and conditioning. Body image, impression management, social physique anxiety, models and theories in the context of strength and conditioning.
The module is delivered over 2 weekends with interim support from tutors and the course team via WEBCT and email. Teaching takes place via lectures, practicals, workshops and group activities. A mixture of critical project work, incorporating development of personal models fo delivery for strength and conditioning, will be coupled with presentations and practical assessments based on client group work.
Teaching hours will consist of 24 hours delivered over 2 weekends and 120 hours of independent study, reading, project work and evaluations. Tutors will provide ongoing support and guidance trhoughout this process. University of Bolton facilities will also be made available to students between weekend delivery courses by arrangement with the programme manager.

|3.||Critically evaluate the theories, models and associated research within the realm of exercise and sport psychology||Explain the context of specific theories in sport and exercise psychology. Identify and retrieve psychology source material. construct of coherent and relevant argument leading to a clearly stated conclusion based on evaluation of available evidence, recognising areas of controversy.|
|4.||Develop an applied understanding of Psychological skills training, the role of the strength and conditioning specialist in delivering, monitoring and evaluating such training and limits of practice||Produce a detailed Pyschological skills training plan based on a detailed needs analysis for an athlete in a defined sport|
|5.||Be able to understand the counselling role a strength and conditioning specialist might assume with a defined client group, recognising limits of practice and establishing appropriate referral pathways.||Demonstrate practical counselling skills in role play creating pathways to onward specilist referral, clearly showing an ability to identify such referral pathways and specialist needs.|
