The Centre for Enterprise at the University of Bolton has been established to link businesses, local authorities, and communities with the departments and services listed below.
Creative Industries is a group set up within the University to promote programmes which cater for the Creative Industries, and to provide applied research, training, consultancy services for the cultural industries. To learn more, please visit the Creative Industries web site
Good ideas happen in all sorts of places and situations, some of them unexpected. The University of Bolton Design Studio, however is one place you can expect great ideas from on a regular bases. By bringing together eighteen different design disciplines under one roof, we're pioneering a new concept in design development and knowledge transfer between industry and academia. Four Floors and over 3000sq ft of space are fitted with the latest design technology for practising designers, technologists, and students from disciplines which include engineering, architecture, graphics, animation, games, electronics, and product design.
It's the kind of environment where business people and designers can work together and produce outstanding results for both community and business.

A wide range of special short courses to provide Continuous Professional Development or extra qualifications in a wide range of subjects. Information Technology, Electronic and Computer Engineering, AutoCad training, CPC for Road Transport, Building and Civil Engineering, Health and Safety, Community Studies, Business Management, Photography and Art and Design are all available in courses of 1 to 3 month duration.
Many courses are aimed at improving performance at work, keeping abreast of new techniques and developments to improve efficiency.

Full-time dedicated research staffs are available to provide support to longer projects.
A wide range of research activity is undertaken in many subject groups. Research areas within Technology include Advanced Materials, Micro-electronics, Auto-engineering and Built Environment. The Business Section considers the needs of Small to Medium Enterprise and encompasses Business Logistics and Supply Chain Solutions. Art, Science and Education research has been strong in Social Policy and Creative Studies. Philosophy and Psychology have good overseas links and the Vocational Education programme is internationally recognised.

Offers impartiality in a wide range of consultancy and practical services and applications in the civil engineering, surveying and building disciplines.
A team of fully qualified Civil Engineers, Surveyors and construction professionals are able to provide a wide range of services including land and engineering surveying, materials testing, geophysical surveys, preliminary site soil and water investigations, transport and environmental impact studies and professional development planning to assist in the preparation for Chartered Membership status of The Institute of Structural Engineers, The Institute of Civil Engineers and The Chartered Institute of Building.

The BLIS* department provides the technical knowledge and support to
link companies electronically for communication and product development
The COPSE* project has been launched to improve the performance of small to medium enterprises. This includes developing websites to sell to on-line to customers. Businesses interested in the COPSE project have the opportunity to be included in electronic networks through the Internet with other suppliers and customers in their market.
The aim of the COPSE project is to move SME’s through the Government’s e-adoption ladder

The PDD Department has access to latest product technology, bespoke training and advice for individual product requirements, product risk analysis and provide the ability to capitalise on current and future opportunities, save time and add value to new product development.
Product development will increase sales, company longevity and company marketability.

- Textile consultancy for technical and commercial textile markets. Bolton Institute’s textile department is renowned for specialists in flame retardant and medical textiles. New textile research areas include high performance fabrics for sports and active wear, a growing market in the UK.
- Specialist Inclusive Design Consultancy ensures products are suitably designed for everyone (irrespective of age or disability).

The Department provides a range of consultancy, evaluation and research services to organisations involved in the delivery, promotion and support of sport, leisure and tourism. It has an extensive track record of evaluation and consultancy work in the field of community development and regeneration and the contribution of sport and tourism to this. It has been engaged by a wide range of public and voluntary organisations, several of whom have asked the Department to undertake further work on their behalf.
The Department also has research and consultancy expertise in the field of health and exercise, most recently in the area of child obesity and exercise promotion. In addition to undertaking research and consultancy work the Department offers bespoke CPD courses to industry at extremely competitive rates.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships provide opportunities for companies to take a graduate on a 1-3 year project. The company has access to Bolton Institute’s resources and a leading academic professional to support and visit the company weekly. Projects can include marketing, e-business and product development and technology.
Projects are defined by the company and will benefit from strict project management to ensure completion. The average scheme increases growth in both sales and profitability.
Training for the KTP Associate while completing a scheme can be an MPhil or Master’s degree.

A work experience programme primarily designed for second year undergraduates to gain valuable business experience whilst completing a technical project or business development idea. The student is monitored throughout and produces a written report on completion of a typical 8 week project. Companies benefit from the skills and knowledge of the undergraduate for a relatively low cost within a structured time frame when often the company cannot spare the resources to devote to a project.
There is support funding for companies subject to conditions.

Full time graduate vacancies are advertised through the year. Web site and printed bulletins offer employers the opportunity to reach a wide range of graduates through the Graduate Vacancy Partnership of 14 higher education institutions: www.gvp.org Part-time vacancies for temporary or voluntary staff are offered through the ‘job-shop’ initiative which acts as a link between companies who need to recruit and a high quality pool of student labour.
Employers are able to advertise for talented staff at no cost to themselves. Many are mature students with considerable work experience behind them.
