WELCOME to my homepage. My name
is Dr. Paul H. McMahon BSc(Hons), PhD and I am a Geotechnical Lecturer
/ Consultant with 35 years of combined industrial and academic experience
in civil engineering and construction related projects. I am employed
as a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment and Engineering
at The University
of Bolton and have
responsibility for teaching GEOTECHNICS (ie. soil mechanics, earthworks,
foundation design, slope stability, retaining walls, ground improvement,
cement stabilisation and geotextile reinforcement) as well as CONTAMINATED
LAND RISK ASSESSMENT and ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT.
I was originally a member of staff at Bolton Institute of Higher
Education as a Senior Lecturer from 1992 to 2000 but then, after a short
period at University of Salford from 2000 to 2002, returned to 'Industry'
for 5 years. That recent industrial experience, added to my previous 16
years of consultancy experience between 1976 to 1992, allowed me to gain
experience of a huge variety of challenging and prestigious geotechnical
projects including Gas and Coal Power Station developments across
Europe and also Internatonally (eg. Benin, Guinea, Ghana and
Togo in West Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, Rotterdam, Perth and Sydney, Australia).
These overseas projects have been tremendously interesting
with my primary role being to carry out geotechnical feasibility assessments.
More "routine" project work has also been undertaken including
Sports Stadia, High Rise Apartments (typically 25 to 58-storeys), Colleges/Schools/Hospitals,
Warehouse/Commercial/Retail Developments, Wind Farms and a number of specialist
modelling situations where planned developments were situated above and/or
adjacent to tunnels, waterways and a variety of other sensitive situations.
Needless to say many projects required careful geotechnical
interpretation and attention to design detail and in many cases scheme
modification being required to mitigate against geotechnical impacts.
These geotechnical projects have also required working in teams alongside
contaminated land, waste management and risk assessment experts involving
regular liaison with contractors, project managers, architects and structural
engineers in a variety of contractual settings and working to tight deadlines.
During this industrial period of time, primarily with
RoC Consulting and Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), I maintained links with
colleagues at the University of Bolton and have undertaken short-course
and MSc Module teaching from time to time in Geotechnical and Contaminated
Land areas to support that enhancement of links between Industry and Academia.
I am passionate about ensuring that all students at Bolton experience
the very best education possible and are also so well versed in industrial
needs in the construction sector that they become valuable Employees within
a very short period of time of their qualification.
My return to the University of Bolton in December 2007
marked an exciting opportunity to focus on providing Industry with the
Graduates that it needs. My personal mission in life is to encourage as
many graduates as possible to have the same interest in "Practical
Geotechnics" that I do, hence I will then hope to see the geotechnical
profession regain its supply of badly needed human resources. To convert
even a handful of students into practising Geotechnical Engineers would
provide me with great personal satisfaction, plus enable students to develop
their own careers in such a worthwhile subject like geotechnics. Hopefully
they will enjoy this as much as I do. In 2010 I have taken on the responsibility
of running the MSc Course in Civil Engineering at Bolton and am happily
enjoying having a great team of dedicated staff on our Programme Team.
For those of you who have come across me in the dim and
distant past I sincerely hope that you are all doing well at the moment
with your careers and are also in good health. If you come across this
web page then please do say "hi" to 'The Doc' as some ex-students
and colleagues seem to refer to me in this manner !!
